Lisbon Coast

1980 saw Richards's first visit to the Lisbon Coast (Estoril, Cascais and Sintra) and since then he has more or less being going at least once a year. Little has changed in those 30 years - yes the surrounding areas have expanded and developed but the interiors of the towns have retained their charm and allure. Travel writers have referred it to as "the undiscovered Portugal" and it is easy to see why. You won't get hordes of tourist in this area, in fact very few hotels have been built in the 30 years since his first visit and this in a way is its main attraction. The mix is about 10% tourists and 90% locals whereas in other tourist areas throughout Europe it is the other way round.

You have beautiful beaches, charming cobbled streets and amazing restaurants with prices that are aimed at the locals not the high prices aimed at the tourists that you could get in other resorts. If you have a taste for fish and seafood this area will be paradise, with the most incredible selection available - all fresh from the Atlantic Ocean.

Before Princess Grace made Monaco the "in place" for the jet set Estoril and Cascais were the areas the royalty of Europe would holiday in back in the 1920s through to the 1950s and consequently there is a fantastic assortment of beautiful villas, palaces and even castles to be found where the rich and famous frequented. The added bonus in spending time in this area is that you are a mere 27 minutes on the local DART (their version) from Lisbon City - one of Europe's most beautiful cities - a must to visit - and renowned as Western Europe's cheapest city for shopping so you are sure to bag a bargain.

Killiney Travel have been organising bespoke holidays to this region for over 15 years and we have built up an excellent reputation. There is a great range of 3,4 and 5 star hotels however self-catering accommodation is not well catered for and consequently not many families holiday here - it is more focused on couples and individuals.
